Café Shachor Hazak (Strong Black Coffee) One Night Performance
Ethiopian-Israeli Group Proves Hip-Hop Can Translate Into Any Language
Israel's most successful young reggae/hip-hop groups, Café Shachor Hazak (translated as Strong Black Coffee), will be in Cincinnati for a one-night performance on Thursday, November 29, 2007, 8:00 p.m. at 20th Century Theatre, 3021 Madison Road on November 29 at 8:00 p.m.
"Strong Black Coffee" has attracted attention from popular media, major artists and fans of all ages and has performed and received standing ovations from the Israeli Prime Minister, the Minister of Education, American students from all over US, and leading Israeli professionals.
Their sound is a hybrid of hip-hop and reggae music interwoven with Ethiopian tribal elements, a sound that can be termed as "glocalization," the rising appearance of artistic hybrids that blend the global and the local. In their music they rap out in Hebrew their life stories-their dreams, love and desire for a better future while sampling Ethiopian melodies and Amharic texts. Their lyrics often speak about Israel's reality and its problems, cutting across lines of ethnicity not only between Arabs and Jews, but within the Jewish community itself.
The concert, part of Cincinnati's year-long Israel@60 celebrations, is presented by the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati's Young Adult Division (YAD) and its Israeli Initiatives Department in partnership with the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. It is funded in part by Israel@60 sponsors Fifth Third Bank, Great American Insurance Group, and Macy's. It is also funded in part by National City Bank, the presenting sponsor for the Young Adult Division and Mercedes-Benz of Cincinnati, the official automobile sponsor of the Young Adult Event.
Tickets to the concert are $18/person in advance; $25/person at the door and include two drinks. Attendees must be 18 years or older and IDs will be checked at the door. Tickets can be purchased online in advance at www.jewishcincinnati.org or by calling Lindsey Kreindler at 513.985.1522 or email lkreindler@jfedcin.org. Tickets are sold on a first-come, first served basis.
