2015 Rising Sun Regatta - Cincinnati Event

The 3^rd Annual Rising Sun Regatta will be held on August 15 and 16 at Riverfront Park on the Ohio River, along Front Street, in Rising Sun Indiana, Opening ceremonies will begin the racing weekend at 12pm on Saturday. The Rising Sun Regatta is free and fun for all ages.

This year, Rising Sun was awarded the SST45 National Championships in three different divisions. With about 50 boats racing in these events, this will ensure the river will be jammed with boats and excitement all day long. Racing teams travel from all parts of the United States to participate in these national powerboat championships. Dan Bunting, director of this year's race says, "We are bringing approximately 50 boats to this year's Rising Sun Regatta. This will be the biggest race to date."  Some of these same boats and drivers compete in races in Detroit, Huntington West Virginia and Marietta Ohio.

This type of racing features some of the biggest and most powerful engines in Powerboat racing. Outboard performance craft travel on a less than a mile long rectangular course averaging 115 mph. These boats can start from a dead engine to 100mph in 6 seconds and turn up to 180 degrees with forces up to 5 G's. These are the fastest turning boats in the world!!

Over the years, Rising Sun has been home to many Regattas and races. Local resident, racer and inventor, JW Whitlock, can be credited with Rising Sun's fascination with boat racing. JW still holds the fastest time ever recorded between Louisville and Cincinnati in his boat, the Hoosier Boy. His record was just a few minutes shy of 60 miles an hour back at the beginning of the Twentieth century. His boats, the Hoosier Boy and Hoosier Girl, along with many of his trophies are on display at the Ohio County Museum, 212 S. Walnut Street, Rising Sun. Admission is free.

To round out the riverfront activities there will be food and arts and crafts vendors. There will be a bouncy house play area for kids as well.

Mary Dorrell, Chairman of this year's event says, "Bring your blankets and lawn chairs and sit in the shade. Or you can enjoy the races from our magnificent riverfront amphitheater and terraced walls. "

This event is free. The Regatta is sponsored by Ohio County Tourism, the City of Rising Sun, Rising Star Casino and the Rising Sun Regional Foundation along with many area businesses.
